Film / TV Writing Visiting Artists
Location: Stony Brook, NY
Open Date:
Nov 14, 2022
Deadline:
Mar 01, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
Description
The Stony Brook University Filmmaking and TV Writing Program invites artists with significant produced work and experience teaching filmmaking and/or TV Writing to apply for Visiting Artist positions for the academic year 2023-2024. Dedicated part-time, in-the-practice visiting artists have always been a key strength of our programs and an important presence on our faculty. Our visiting appointments are renewable, flexible and may be configured to match a variety of circumstances. Successful candidates are most commonly accomplished filmmakers and/or TV writers who do not seek full time academic positions or workloads but find that teaching enhances their lives as working artists and who enjoy a connection with a thriving community of filmmakers and writers. The teaching load typically, but not always, consists of one to two workshops per semester, working with one or two Capstone advisees per academic year, and a presentation of your work. Compensation ranges from $7,500 to $25,000 per semester, depending on qualifications, obligations, and length of term. Other than one-time, single term appointments, these positions may be also eligible for benefits, including health, dental, and vision. Teaching opportunities are at our main campus, a bustling university location in Stony Brook, NY.
Our program is committed to a highly diversified curriculum across many genres of filmmaking and writing. Film (FLM) encompasses directing, screenwriting, and producing for narrative, documentary and social impact filmmaking. TV Writing (TVW) includes teaching pilot, spec, limited series and/or web series. Both FLM and TVW are within an entrepreneurial, innovative, team-based department that also offers and B.F.A. in Creative Writing & Literature and an MFA and Film and Television Writing.
Students range widely in age, backgrounds, and life experiences. They are strongly encouraged to take exploratory, multi-disciplinary, hybrid approaches to their filmmaking and writing in order to discover the idioms in which they are most powerfully able to recognize and express themselves. The visiting artist will be someone dedicated to fully participating in such a community, which is as encouraging and cooperative as it is artistically and intellectually vigorous.
