Job Description

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment at all levels (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). Appointments will be made at a rank commensurate with experience and accomplishment.

We seek applicants with significant accomplishments and future potential in the broad area of advanced materials characterization using microscopy techniques. Stanford has recently made substantial investments in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and is poised to further expand in this area. We are thus particularly interested in candidates who will advance technique development and applications of TEM to materials science but will consider all candidates in the broad area of microscopy for materials. The successful candidate is expected to make major contributions to scholarship in microscopy in materials science and to contribute significant leadership to related academic programs at Stanford. Furthermore, there are significant partnering opportunities with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Stanford University has excellent shared resources for materials synthesis, nanofabrication, computation and characterization to enable materials research discoveries, as represented by the Stanford Nano Shared Facilities (SNSF), the Stanford Research Computing Facility (SRCF), the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS), the Center for Biomedical Imaging at Stanford (CBIS) and facilities at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will both contribute to and benefit from these facilities.

The successful candidate must have completed, or be completing, a Ph.D. in the advertised field or a closely related one. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate level, develop advanced graduate courses in their research specialty, and develop a world-class research program. We are looking for a motivated individual who is committed to excellence in teaching and the mentoring of students in a multidisciplinary environment, potentially spanning several departments and schools, including the Schools of Engineering, Medicine, the new Doerr School of Sustainability, and Humanities and Sciences.

Applicants should include a CV listing their educational and professional backgrounds, a current list of published work, and the names of at least three referees who may be consulted by the search committee. An indication of how the candidate’s experience matches the position described above should also be given. Applicants are encouraged to write a detailed description of their plans for future research (not to exceed 4 pages) and how those plans might be realized in a Stanford setting, as well as to submit similar statements on educational aspects, focusing especially on their vision of teaching to students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and related fields (not to exceed 1 page). The MSE Department values faculty who are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates may optionally include as part of their research or teaching statement a brief discussion of how their work will further these ideals or submit it as a separate document. The appointment is expected to be made during the forthcoming academic year.

Please apply online at: https://mse.stanford.edu/jobs. Applications should be submitted by January 15, 2023, while application evaluation will begin immediately. Questions should be directed to the Search Committee Chair, c/o Yusong Rogers, via electronic mail to msesearch@stanford.edu.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching and clinical missions.
