The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Earth System Science , with the potential for a joint appointment as a Center Fellow in an institute in the Stanford Doerr School. Earth System Science is the study of the world’s air, water, land, and life as an integrated system. Our department is focused on uniting basic and purpose-driven research to understand how the Earth functions, the many ways it is changing, and the consequences for people and other species. We are interested in candidates who can contribute to the department’s strategic research and teaching priorities. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, hydrologic science, global ecology, biodiversity, climate adaptation, human & planetary health, and sustainable food systems. We also welcome applicants who are advancing approaches to environmental data science, systems science, and/or Indigenous environmental (or ecological) traditional knowledge. All interested candidates in any area of Earth System Science are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application materials should be submitted online at this link, and must include: (i) cover letter; (ii) curriculum vitae, (iii) research statement (maximum 2 pages); (iv) teaching statement (maximum 1 page); and (v) contact information for three reference letter writers. Applications must be received by August 31, 2024, at 11 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, to ensure full consideration by the committee.

The Department of Earth System Science, Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an inclusive academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and outlooks. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these ideals.  Additional information about Stanford’s IDEAL initiative may be found here.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching and clinical missions.

The expected base pay range for this position is $138,000 – $158,000. Stanford University has provided a base pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
