Position Summary:

This position is a non-tenure track appointment (9-month) as an Assistant Professor of Practice in Sculpture in the School of Art & Design, College of Arts & Media, at SIU Carbondale, beginning in the Fall semester of 2022. Candidates should demonstrate extensive knowledge and commitment to the ever-expanding field of sculpture. A studio space will be provided.

The School of Art and Design (SoAD) has 21 faculty members, approximately 140 undergraduate majors, 35 graduate students and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). SoAD offers: a BFA degree in Art with specializations in Art Education, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Metalsmithing, Industrial Design, and Communication Design; a BA degree in Art with specializations in Art Education, Art History, General Studio, Photography; a MFA degree with specializations in Design, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, and Metalsmithing; and a graduate certificate in Art History.

The College of Arts and Media houses six schools: Architecture; Art and Design; Journalism; Media Arts; Music; Theater & Dance.  The breadth of programs offered in the college provides a rich environment for interdisciplinary collaborative research. Ideal candidates will have traditional and contemporary experience in graphic design; with knowledge in at least one area: app development, web design, digital media, interactive design, and or UX/UI.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester at the undergraduate and or graduate level of woodworking and metal casting. The candidate may be provided with an opportunity to teach a summer course. Duties also include coordinating and co-maintaining, organizing, and monitoring the sculpture facilities and co-supervising graduate technicians, as well as upkeep, ordering, scheduling, and operation of CNC and CAD associated equipment. Other responsibilities may include public woodworking and metal casting demonstrations.


Minimum Qualifications:

An MFA in Sculpture is required at the time of application.  Candidates must have good communication and organizational skills and have the ability to work closely and productively with other faculty, students, and studio technicians. The candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching a broad range of sculptural inquiry, including traditional and non-traditional techniques, theoretical approaches, and materials. Knowledge of traditional sculptural processes, including woodworking and metal casting, is essential.  The successful applicant must be proficient in organizing and maintaining sculpture studio-related equipment, specifically with woodworking and metal casting applications. Applicants must show proficiency in teaching a variety of wood and metalworking techniques and concepts at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The candidate must also exhibit evidence of a strong commitment to an active creative research exhibition record.


Preferred Qualifications:

Previous teaching experience at the collegiate level beyond graduate appointments is preferred.

Knowledge and experience working with CNC and CAD programs will be strongly considered.
