Job Description

The Department of English at Santa Clara University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Poetry Writing, to begin fall 2023 as part of a cluster hire in Race, Inequality, and Social Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences. We are particularly interested in poets whose work emphasizes racial and social justice, with additional interests in environmental justice and LGBTQ+ studies, and in candidates committed to undergraduate writing and publishing. Successful candidates must have a strong record of teaching undergraduates and robust publications in literary magazines (print or electronic). The candidate should be interested in collaborating with faculty and students (in the English Department and other departments such as Ethnic Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies) to enhance a vibrant campus creative writing presence. We especially seek candidates with publications related to intersectional racial justice in journals with diverse voices and readerships. Inquiries may be sent by email to jgopp@scu.edu.

This position is part of a cluster hire in Race, Inequality, and Social Justice that includes positions in the departments of Art & Art History, English, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health, and Religious Studies.

The Santa Clara University English Department supports work in critical race and ethnic studies, feminist/gender studies, environmental humanities, and queer studies, and contributes to interdisciplinary programs in these fields. Teaching will include  lower-division introduction(s) to creative writing, upper-division courses in the candidate’s areas of specialization, and first-year critical thinking and writing courses; other courses may include foundation courses for the major and new courses developed to build our creative writing program.

Located in the heart of northern California’s Silicon Valley, Santa Clara University is a Jesuit, Catholic university. The SCU College of Arts and Sciences offers an education in the liberal arts and sciences. Santa Clara University is an Equal Opportunity /Affirmative Action employer, committed to excellence through diversity; we particularly welcome applications from women, non-binary and trans persons, persons of color, and members of historically underrepresented groups.
