Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications

Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, is a regionally accredited four-year comprehensive institution offering 61 distinct graduate and undergraduate programs. Located on the historic Eastern Shore, SU’s beautiful campus is some 30 miles from the Atlantic beaches and 2.5 hours from Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Salisbury University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications in the Office of the President.

Primary Job Duties:  

Plan, develop and execute all communications for the President’s Office as well as manage university communications for the Executive Staff. Plan and manage social media, email, video, and other mediums of communication for the President’s Office. Write and prepare speeches, remarks, briefing memorandums, proposals and correspondence for the President’s Office and Executive Staff. Staff the President at events and meetings on and off-campus. Work with the Chief of Staff and Executive Staff to lead special projects, events, and strategic initiatives.

 Minimum Qualifications:  

Bachelor’s degree inpublic relations, communications, marketing, journalism, business administration, or political science or a related field and seven to ten (7-10) years of related experience or Master’s degree in the same disciplines or related field and five to seven (5-7) years of related experience.  Prior professional level communication experience in either not-for-profit, government, business/industry, or preferred in Education.

Demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to effectively research to understand the subject material, context, and audience when creating communications for senior-level executives. Demonstrated proficiency and skill in the principles and practices of effective writing, editing, proofreading, reporting in executive communication content creation, including social media messages. Knowledge and vision to take on and deliver broad-scope, high impact projects and/or communications in support of strategic goals, mission, and vision. Ability to work discretely on sensitive and confidential assignments and maintains the trust and confidence of the senior-level executives.

Must be detail oriented and have excellent interpersonal, customer service, organization and planning, prioritization, problem solving, follow through, time management, and oral & written communication skills. Also, must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

 Preferred Qualifications:  

Experience in communication data analytics and tools is desired.

This is a full-time exempt State position with a full benefits package. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is considered essential and may be expected to report to work when the campus is closed such as in extreme weather conditions. This position requires evening and weekend hours as needed based on the needs of the Office of the President.
