Job Description

Please see at the bottom what materials must be submitted to apply. You must attach a CV and a 500-word statement about how you would hope to use the two years of the fellowship at this moment in your career and how you would contribute to Rice’s arts community through teaching and/or production, contact information for three references (should the search committee choose to contact references); please do not request letters or have letters sent in advance of a request from the search committee).

The Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning (CERCL) seeks a Fellow to serve as a key member of Rice University’s Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts (VADA) for one-year renewable for a second year. CERCL and VADA are excited to review a wide range of cultural practitioners for this fellowship. The first year of the fellowship is the 2022-2023 academic year (although a later start date is possible depending on COVID restrictions, etc.). The fellow will take a leading role in helping to shape and implement arts and culture initiatives that aim to advance social justice and equity and will have the opportunity to help shape the design and implementation of new initiatives that can help advance the arts and culture agenda at Rice and in Houston. The fellowship will entail teaching two courses and conducting research.

Collaboration with faculty and staff from CERCL and VADA as well as the larger Houston community would be expected to further enhance presentation of the arts and represent the way in which the arts serve as tools for and representations of critical thinking, effective communications strategies, and platforms for engaging pressing issues. Applicants should be early career artists and cultural practitioners from a full range of disciplines and media, including but not limited to: studio art, performance, film, sound, new media, movement-based research, installation, and experimental/theoretical writing in aesthetics and politics. A dynamic candidate would find it beneficial to spend two years teaching and working in an artistically vibrant university community.

The fellow’s primary responsibility will be to teach two courses (subject to approval by CERCL, VADA, and the Dean of Humanities) but the fellow may also be invited to consider artistic opportunities, such as curating an exhibit or creating an event with students. There may be opportunities for the fellow to host lectures, and partner with other Rice and community organizations.

In addition to teaching, the fellow would be responsible for campus and community engagement. This includes helping to develop and administer CERCLs “Thinking about Thinking” program, a new initiative meant to highlight attention to pressing social issues across the divisions of the university and demonstrate the various ways they are understood and explored based on disciplinary tools.

The expected starting salary for this position will be between $49,000 and $60,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Roles and Duties

  • Teach two courses in the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts
  • Develop CERCLs “Thinking about Thinking’ Initiative
  • Collaborate with local organizations and members of the Rice community on Arts Engagement programs

  • Strong outreach skills
  • Experience with teaching or training
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding collaborative skills
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Sensitivity to privacy
