Pitzer College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Spanish. The field of specialization is open. The successful candidate will be joining the Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MLLC) field group, a multidisciplinary academic department that offers courses in Spanish, Portuguese, and French languages and cultures, and houses programs in writing and English language learning as well.

Candidates must have a transcultural and interdisciplinary research agenda with a primary focus on Spanish-Speaking Latin America. We welcome those whose scholarship also intersects with Brazil, the United States, Africa, and the Latin American diasporas. Training, demonstrated excellence, and deep interest in language teaching at all levels of proficiency at the undergraduate level are required. Candidates must have documented experience and/or interest in connecting language and culture teaching to local and global community-based initiatives and an interest in working collaboratively within a field group with rich potential for cross-disciplinary teaching, research, and programming.

Pitzer College has developed a nationally recognized community-based language learning approach that strengthens ties with neighboring communities, virtual communities, and study abroad sites. Thus, candidates with a teaching and research record and interests in the intersection of language, writing, community engagement, study abroad experiences, and global/local issues offer a desired asset.

Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish is required, proficiency and ability to teach in Portuguese or French are a plus. Evidence of promise in scholarship and a PhD in Spanish, Latin American Cultural studies, Latin American Literature, Hispanic studies, Hispanic Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Critical Discourse Studies, or a related field are required. Willingness and ability to work collaboratively with other members of the field group is also required.

In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful candidate‘s responsibilities will include:

• Teaching a total of five courses per year as needed, including both lower-division language courses and upper-division courses in the area of Latin American and Caribbean Studies; • Regularly teaching the Spanish major’s senior seminar and supervising the major’s capstone projects; • Developing a core-course for the Spanish major on themes and debates in the cultural history of Latin America and the Caribbean in collaboration with other tenure-track faculty in the field group; • Contributing to the existing Spanish language and culture curriculum through local and global community-based initiatives; • Participating in curricular design, development of pedagogical materials; • Professional development in proficiency-based language pedagogy and assessment; • Working collaboratively across the field group; • Teaching courses in English for the college’s first-year seminar program, as needed; and • Taking an active role in student advising and serving in college governance.

The MLLC field group encourages collaboration with the Chican@ Latina@ Transnational Studies field group, the Gender and Feminist Studies program, and the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies and Latin American Studies.

Compensation range: $93,000 – $95,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
