Our program values candidates who utilize land/landscape-based educational approaches, and multiple media and actions to help our students understand critical engagement with the diminishment of the biosphere and ecosystems services. We are searching for scholars who can probe, explicate, and unpack the apparatus of human-induced land degradation, extraction, climate change, and species destruction, and related impacts on people. We especially value candidates whose portfolio of scholarly or creative work demonstrates a fearless embrace of the uncertainties of the moment, encompasses the breadth of discourse across disciplines, and carves out new pathways that merge research and creative work with teaching and service or community engagement.

The successful candidate will develop courses within a liberal arts environment to document, interpret, and project futures within the lived-in world. Our new colleague will be asked to teach a section of Introduction to Environmental Analysis and to periodically offer a writing intensive first-year seminar. Additional courses might include Sustainable Ecosystems, Environmental Art & Design, Visual Ecology, and other classes that bridge the Sustainability and the Built Environment track, and the Environment and Society track of the Environmental Analysis major. A record of student engagement in hands-on learning and community praxis is favored. A Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant discipline is expected.

Pitzer College has a strong institutional commitment to diversity in all areas and strongly encourages candidates from underrepresented groups.
