VISITING PROFESSOR POSITION IN PHYSICS
The Department of Natural Sciences of Pitzer College and Scripps College

The Department of Natural Sciences of Pitzer and Scripps Colleges (two members of the 7-college Claremont Colleges Consortium) seeks to hire a visiting professor in physics beginning July 1, 2024. The position is a two-year appointment with the possibility of continuation. We seek an individual with demonstrated passion and excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarship. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics or an engineering-related field and be able to teach a wide range of upper-division and entry-level physics courses. Exact departmental teaching needs are not yet known, but may include a subset of the following courses:  (1) introductory physics for the life sciences, (2) a computationally based math methods for physicists course, (3) an upper-division Lagrangian mechanics course, (4) a sophomore-level electronics lab, (5) an upper-division lab, (6) an upper-division electromagnetism course, or (7) astro for non-science majors.  The ability to supervise senior-thesis research projects is also highly desirable.

The Department of Natural Sciences is an integrative science department composed of over 40 scientists in biology, chemistry, environmental science, neuroscience, and physics. The six members of the physics discipline also oversee an active 3-2 pre-engineering program.  Faculty in the department are part of the rich intellectual environment of the Claremont Colleges Consortium (with 150+ scientists) and also benefit from close proximity to major research universities in the Southern California region (e.g., Caltech, UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, UC Riverside), enabling collaboration both within and outside the department. The charming town of Claremont, CA, is a welcoming community in vibrant Los Angeles County. It is within convenient driving distance of both the mountains and the ocean and offers a high quality of life.

The salary for this position will range from $72,000-$96,000 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Please apply online at http://apply.interfolio.com/139882. Upload (i) a cover letter, up to 3 pages, that describes your background, teaching experience, and research experience (including whether you could readily engage students in research); your letter should also clearly indicate which of the above-named courses you are enthusiastic about teaching, which ones you might be open to teaching after some preparation, and which ones you prefer not to teach,  (ii) a C.V., (iii) a brief statement outlining your ideas or experience with fostering an educational environment that is inclusive for all students, and (iv) the names and e-mail addresses of three or more references (at least two of whom should address teaching).   Please notify your references that we will require their letters of recommendation promptly should you advance to the semifinalist stage. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning February 7, 2024, and the position will remain open until filled. Further inquiries may be emailed to Professor Adam Landsberg at alandsberg@kecksci.claremont.edu.  Additional information about our department (which was formerly known as the W.M. Keck Science Dept.) can be found at http://www.kecksci.claremont.edu/,  https://catalog.scrippscollege.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=27&ent_oid=2008
