Job Description

Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) seeks a 10-month Counselor located at the Portland-Metro campus. Contract dates are September 1 – June 30 each year, with possible additional hours during summer term.

The Counselor provides personal, academic, career and crisis counseling to students, primarily within a one-to-one setting in-person, with an option to utilize telecounseling as appropriate. The counselor engages in clinical assessment, assigns DSM diagnoses, and refers for medication or medical care as needed.

This position is jointly supervised by the Director of the Integrated Student Health Center (ISHC; who is located on the Klamath Falls campus and supervises clinical issues) and the Associate Dean of Students (who is located on the Portland-Metro campus and supervises day-to-day operations).

The Counselor will receive clinical support via weekly consultation with other ISHC clinical staff members (including the Director, psychiatric advanced practice nurse, and other counseling staff) by participating (remotely) in the ISHC counseling team’s weekly clinical consultation meetings as well as meeting with the ISHC Director on a regular basis. The Counselor will also be an active member of the Portland-Metro Student Services team, participating in meetings and campus events as their caseload allows.

Because the Counselor may intervene with suicidal or homicidal students they will regularly make decisions which have the potential to save a human life (or cost a life, putting the college at significant legal risk). The Counselor will need to be clear about their boundaries with clients and for keeping confidentiality; and also will need to know what duties they are not yet competent to perform. Additionally, the Counselor is responsible for working in a safe manner, compliant with safety regulations, maintaining ethical guidelines and professional boundaries.

A combination of on-site and remote work is a possibility.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience conducting counseling in a university setting.
Training and experience conducting counseling in a virtual setting (i.e. telecounseling).
Ability to assess counseling client needs.
Ability to build and maintain positive therapeutic relationships with clients.
Ability to establish effective treatment plans.
Ability to provide effective personal, academic, career and crisis counseling.
Knowledge of counseling theories and techniques.
Knowledge of ethical codes and related legal statutes.
Ability to learn and utilize our electronic medical records system, Point and Click, to make appointments and maintain clinical documentation
Ability to communicate effectively through writing and speaking.
Ability to work effectively with diverse students (e.g. of varying ethnicities, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.).
Ability to work effectively in teams.
Knowledge of limits of competence as it relates to ability to provide counseling services.
Knowledge of mental health issues affecting college students.
Ability to seek out consultation when needed to improve clinical services and integrate feedback from consultation into services.

Additional Requirements:

Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, or closely related mental health field.
Minimum of one year experience in counseling or mental health setting required (but can include time spent in internship/practicum).
Experience facilitating individual counseling with clients.
Licensed as professional counselor, social worker, or marriage and family therapist.

Applications will continue to be accepted after the initial review date until a sufficient applicant pool has been achieved or the position is filled..
