The Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State University sparks creativity and encourages exploration through engaging exhibitions, relevant programming, and thought-provoking educational experiences. Focusing on outstanding examples of art, craft, and design, the museum utilizes cross-disciplinary collaborations and its extensive collections to foster critical thinking and expand worldviews. The primary mission of the Gregg is to support the learning mission of the University. To support the mission of the University, the Gregg Museum of Art & Design collects, interprets, and exhibits exemplary hand and machine-made objects to foster learning and understanding of the cultures of North Carolina and the world.
Essential Job Duties:
Reporting to the Executive Director for the Arts, the Director of the Gregg Museum provides strategic vision for and manages the daily operations of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design. This position leads the Gregg as an integrated, collaborative part of NC State that engages the University and local communities. The Director will develop partnerships with NC State faculty, the local arts community, and other departments within the Arts NC State umbrella to expand the reach and audience of the museum. This will include pursuing curriculum integration for museum collections and programs as part of the University’s strategic pursuit of high-impact learning practices as well as opportunities to supplement the University’s courses with object-based education. Oversees creative and innovative development of exhibitions and educational programs, including efforts that help connect the museum to campus-wide efforts to develop outdoor spaces that combine art, experience, and nature. Develops, initiates, and schedules appropriate programming in conjunction with all exhibitions to enhance the educational impact of, and encourage better understanding of, those exhibitions and the permanent collection.
The Director serves as principal spokesperson for the museum, including coordinating and leading outreach to students, campus, and the community. Ensures professional museum standards for collection management and that conversation, exhibition, and educational programming standards are met. This position directs the museum’s financial planning, budget preparation, and management, in addition to overseeing strategic planning and growth of the collection. The Director will assign responsibilities, lead, supervise, and evaluate performance of core museum staff. The incumbent will collaborate with the Director of Arts Development to implement comprehensive fundraising and advancement strategies, including the development and cultivation of relationships with current and potential funders and donors (individuals, corporations and foundations). Intellectual curiosity and a forward-thinking perspective will be an asset in this role.
The incumbent will attend a variety of events throughout the year. Some travel and occasional night and weekend work is required.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Experience
• Master of Fine Arts or other terminal degree in a related area with a minimum 5 years of experience in a leadership role in the arts.
Other Required Qualifications:
• Relevant success in a leadership role; significant managerial accomplishments with visionary and administrative components
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethics of successful fundraising and grant proposal writing.
• Demonstrated record of membership development.
• Current knowledge of the best curatorial, registrarial, and art handling practices.
• Proven record of successfully staged exhibitions from own collections and obtained exhibitions from other museums.
• Confidence and capability in judgment for additions to collections, deaccessions, and exhibition staging.
• Evident self-starter who can thrive in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to take risks in staging creative and innovative exhibitions, and connecting those exhibitions to the University and local communities.
• Capabilities in budgeting and financial management.
• Ability to effectively engage, collaborate with, and communicate with a broad range of constituencies, including students, faculty, and student campus leaders; local and regional arts community stakeholders; and donors and supporters of the Gregg, primarily through the Friends of the Gregg.
• Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well-being.
Preferred Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in art history or terminal degree in American material culture and/or an advanced degree in museum management.
