The NYU School of Professional Studies seeks a Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor of Publishing for the Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts (PALA), effective January 2024.  (The rank of the position will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.)

The Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts is actively seeking candidates who are distinguished academics and/or professionals with working experience in book publishing and digital media, who have the ability to teach courses in book publishing and digital media.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts, the successful candidate will work closely with the Academic Director to implement the vision for expanding the unit’s publishing programs and initiatives, and to increase the Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts’ profile and visibility locally, nationally, and internationally.

The successful candidate will teach within the graduate program in publishing; may also teach within corporate and executive education programs or the NYU Summer Publishing Institute; may teach in other programs in the division; develop courses; advise students; participate in the peer review process for new faculty members in the publishing program; collaborate with other faculty and industry partners; and engage with the broader NYU SPS academic community, as appropriate.  Faculty members should have experience working with a diverse base of professionals and teaching a diverse population of students.  This full-time position is a nine-month appointment with a two-year renewable faculty contract.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 – $135,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will (i) hold an advanced degree, preferably in publishing, communications, humanities, or similar; (ii) have a significant industry or academic track record; (iii) have at least three years of academic experience and effectiveness in higher education, (iv) have experience working with or teaching diverse student populations.  Candidates should provide evidence of initiative in curricular development, demonstrate an ability or potential ability to engage in meaningful service or administrative work, and supply evidence of promise in scholarly work.  Strong writing and communication skills are desirable.

About the Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts
The Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts, includes three graduate degrees, the MS in Publishing, the MS in Professional Writing, and the MS in Translation and Interpreting as well as continuing education and certificate courses in a wide range of topics in the humanities, publishing and storytelling, among other areas.

The Center is at the forefront of publishing education and recognized globally for its innovative, practice-based curriculum, faculty of industry leaders, and deep industry outreach and involvement in terms of internships, events and international student opportunities.  Offering two pathways to publishing, the Center provides students with the opportunity to enroll in a 36-credit graduate degree, the MS in Publishing, which is now celebrating its 25th anniversary at the NYU School of Professional Studies, or a four-week summer intensive.  Its online MS degrees in Professional Writing and Translation and Interpreting are industry leaders and standard bearers in online education.

With a deep commitment to providing a wide range of industry events, conferences, and executive education programs in the US and globally, the Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts provides accessible education on a global scale.  It plans to launch a new executive education program for mid- to senior-level book publishing executives in January 2024. Its renowned NYU Media Talk series explores important topics in publishing and media and is attended by publishing leaders and professionals all over the world.
