Job Description

Mitchell College is building on its long history of making education more accessible by pioneering an approach which is flexible, strength-based, and interest-driven.  Our abilities-based approach to learning focuses on teaching adaptability through curriculum that provides multiple opportunities for students to apply learning in different classroom, social, and professional contexts.  To keep this model innovative, vibrant, and responsive to students’ needs and interests, we hire staff and faculty who are invested in collaboration and community-building.  Our approach to campus life ensures that students learn what they need to live life well, both professionally and personally.

Mitchell College seeks to hire an Assistant Professor with expertise in chemistry to join our Sciences Division. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory courses in chemistry and possibly biology and/or upper-level chemistry courses to students in our Health Sciences and our Marine & Environmental Science programs.  The successful candidate may also have an opportunity to develop general education chemistry offerings for non-science majors.  As Mitchell continues to expand its academic programs in the sciences, we are searching for a colleague who shares our strong focus on teaching, our commitment to student support and success, and our enthusiasm for program development.

Doctoral degree in Chemistry (ABD candidates near completion will be considered) strongly preferred; individuals with a master’s degree may be considered for an Instructor-level position
Strong undergraduate teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with students with learning differences
Knowledge of Abilities-Based Education
Experience teaching undergraduate chemistry and labs
Evidence of service, including department or college-wide service
Essential Duties:

Teach twenty-four semester hours (three to four courses per semester), effectively preparing and delivering on-campus classes and associated laboratory sections
Perform all duties related to course management and delivery (e.g. assess student knowledge in course content and through Mitchell’s Abilities-Based Education model, use campus-wide learning management systems)
Foster student success by communicating with students and other members of Mitchell’s student support network
Assist in curriculum and program review within the department and the College-wide Abilities- Based Education model
Participate in college meetings, committees, etc., that pertain to information, policies, and recommendations that affect the academic tenor and quality, direction, and mission of the College
Participate in department and College-wide collaborations to further the mission of the College
Engage in scholarship that sustains and enriches teaching
