Job Description

1855 Professorship in Community and Urban Journalism

The School of Journalism seeks a scholar of Community and Urban Journalism with a research and teaching focus on race, ethnicity, economic development, and news and information ecosystems.

The School seeks a scholar who examines the role of news and information in addressing inequities and works to reimagine and bring about more equitable news ecosystems. Reliable information, rooted in data-driven procedures, plays an essential role in democratic self- governance at the community level. Reliable information – produced with and for communities– is therefore essential to addressing persistent social, political, and economic inequities. Research could address a range of issues, for example (1) the growth of so-called news deserts – those urban and rural places where local news is not produced – and the political, economic, and social deficits that follow; and (2) the emergence of conceptually, socially, and technologically innovative journalism initiatives that help communities to understand themselves and thrive. Candidates should have a terminal degree with a significant record of research and publication. Professional experience in journalism is valued.

We expect the newly hired faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses that focus on news coverage, or the lack thereof, of race, ethnicity, economic, and other inequities in urban and rural communities.

The School of Journalism is home to the American Communities Project, which uses data and reporting to study the cultural, socio-economic, and political changes that are remaking the country. The faculty member would help tie this project to MSU’s research, teaching and strategic priorities.

While a faculty member in the School of Journalism in the MSU College of Communication Arts & Sciences, the individual would be encouraged to develop working relationships with other units on campus, such as Geography, Rhetoric, Arts and Humanities, the Division of Public Health, and/or the MSU Center for Community and Economic Development. This position aligns to Michigan State University’s strategic goals to support and expand DEI-related research and public engagement.

To apply, please refer to Posting #811287 and complete an electronic submission at the Michigan State University Employment Opportunities website https://careers.msu.edu. Applicants should submit electronically (1) a cover letter summarizing qualifications for the position, (2) a vita, and (3) the names and contact information of three references.

Please direct inquiries to the chair of the search committee, Esther Thorson (ethorson@msu.edu). Search for candidates will begin Summer, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.
