Quantitative Researcher Position (PhD or MD/MBBS Required)

Overview:

The Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at Assistant or Associate Professor level with an option of between 5/8ths and 8/8ths appointment at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. Faculty candidates must have training in quantitative methodology within the broad fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, quantitative psychology, or quantitative sociology. This should include research experience in conducting analyses related to the delivery, conduct, or outcomes of healthcare. Strong candidates will demonstrate an ability to develop well-designed applications for federal research funding, including NIH and VA Merit applications, support clinical and health services researchers in development of quantitative aims in applications for federal funding, and have a background of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Research addressing population health, developing programs to optimize health outcomes for vulnerable populations, or investigating the cost of disparities in care is valued. Expertise in conducting retrospective data analysis using large national datasets, VA databases, or health system electronic medical record data are also encouraged. Successful candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for developing and working with multidisciplinary teams and engaging faculty and trainees, and an interest in conducting independent research as well as supporting multidisciplinary teams in developing collaborative grant applications.

Position Requirements:

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (i.e. PhD) or a combination of medical degree and research training (i.e. MD, MS) with strong theoretical grounding and training in biostatistics, epidemiology, quantitative psychology, or quantitative sociology, excellent oral and written communication skills to support rigorous program of research, and experience in developing and conducting quantitative methodology. The candidate will be appointed in the Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine with tenure-track appointment, will have the option of between a 5/8ths and an 8/8ths appointment at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, and will have research center membership at the Center for Advancing Population Science. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.

Roles and Expectations:

Build an independent and externally funded portfolio.
Support multidisciplinary research teams in federal funding applications.
Maintain scholarly productivity through publications of peer reviewed manuscripts and speaking at national/international conferences.
Advise master’s and doctoral students and mentor medical students.
Conduct quantitative analyses and review analyses conducted by master’s level statisticians in support of health services research efforts.
Support Department and Division goals to increase research productivity through collaborations with clinical faculty.
Possibility to teach graduate level courses to master’s and doctoral students.
About Division of General Internal Medicine

The Division of General Internal Medicine is one of ten divisions within the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The mission is best expressed through its commitment to patient care, medical education, research, and innovation, as well as its regional and national presence as a leader in the comprehensive care and treatment of the adult patient. The Division consists of seven Sections: four clinical sections and three non-clinical sections. The clinical sections of Primary Care, Hospitalist Medicine, Perioperative and Consultative Medicine, and the VA General Internal Medicine (including both primary care and hospitalist medicine) focus on responding to our constantly evolving landscape of healthcare at both Froedtert Hospital and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. The three non-clinical sections allow for rapid growth and strong infrastructure to support the three additional missions of MCW: research (through the Research Section), education (through the Faculty Development Section, and community engagement (through the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement Section). Many faculty members serve in leadership roles with of the Society of General Internal Medicine, the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physicians, and present frequently at regional and national meetings of these societies. The Division is home to many of the key educational leaders in the Department of Medicine, and a large health services research group with over $10 million in federal research funding. The GIM Research Section aims to create research infrastructure and build a culture of research across the Division that facilitates and expands research funding, supporting clinical, population, education, and industry research.

About Clement J. Zablocki Veterans’ Administration Medical Center (VAMC)

The Clement J. Zablocki VAMC provides primary care and specialty health services, including mental health care, audiology and speech, cancer care and treatment, dentistry and oral surgery, extended care and rehabilitation, palliative and hospice care, pharmacy services, treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. The VAMC includes a campus on 245 acres on the western edge of Milwaukee. The hospital has 113 acute care beds, 150 domiciliary beds and 113 nursing home care unit beds, and serves a population of more than 234,000 Veterans. Research is an important part of the Clement J. Zablocki VAMC’s mission, with a goal to discover knowledge, develop VA scientists and health care leaders and create innovations that advance health care for Veterans and the nation. A current focus of the VA research enterprise at the Clement J. Zablocki VAMC is building a health services research program with an emphasis on health equity and the social determinants of health.

About Center for Advancing Population Science

The mission of the Center for Advancing Population Sciences (CAPS) is to develop, test, and implement innovative strategies for transforming healthcare that optimizes quality, value, and cost. As an interdisciplinary group of health services researchers collaborating in a diverse array of subject areas, CAPS conducts research on health care services and related health outcomes, facilitates a supportive environment for MCW investigators developing externally funded research programs, determines the need for and recruits new faculty in targeted methodologic areas, and provides a seminar series to enhance collaboration. In bringing together a diverse group of investigators, the Center fosters the creation of innovative ideas regarding how to evaluate and improve population health across diverse populations and geographic regions. CAPS currently supports $40 million in active research awards, with over half funded through the National Institute of Health. Research focus areas include health systems, population health research, health disparities/health equity, implementation science, and global health research. Efforts have focused on building meaningful collaborations to support innovative research, analysis, implementation and impact at a local and global level.
