Job Description

The Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University is seeking a strategic, forward-thinking, and dynamic diversity, equity, and inclusion leader to serve as the Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion (CODI).

Reporting directly to the chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and serving as a faculty member of the department, the CODI will guide and lead the department and in parallel with college efforts to create an inclusive educational environment that values and demonstrates its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A successful candidate will establish and nurture collaborative partnerships within the university and the greater Milwaukee community to expand community engagement and outreach efforts. Additionally, the CODI will be responsible for the recruitment, outreach, and retention of underrepresented students interested in physical therapy and health science careers with the support of the department with the goal of expanding the diversity pipelines to college undergraduate and health science programs. A faculty member embedded within the physical environment of the CHS is required to facilitate the day-to-day needs of the students, faculty, and staff. They will be expected to support all decision-making committees within the department to keep DEI issues at the forefront of all endeavors.

 

Duties and responsibilities include:

Provide leadership, coordination, consultation, assistance, strategic oversight, and direction, regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion matters that may impact student performance in the Department of Physical Therapy and be a resource to other departments in the College of Health Sciences.
Cultivate and promote inclusive learning and work environments specific to health science education that encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Teach the Culture and Disability course (PHTH 4512) in the Department of Physical Therapy.
Direct the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Physical Therapy, including budget management including but not limited to hiring, training, and supervising student employees.
Inter-professional Education (IPE) – The CODI will work with Marquette’s IPE coordinator and faculty who use IPE modules in the classroom to develop IPE modules that focus on cultural diversity. These modules will highlight issues in cultural diversity that affect health care delivery and health disparities with the goal of bringing these issues to life for health professions students. These modules will be made available to all health care professions units on campus and will be prepared to reach all health professional students on campus.
Develop, manage, and execute the health science specific services that address the recruitment, retention, graduation, and professional placement of underrepresented students in the department.
Collaborate with student organizations, staff, and faculty at Marquette University and other higher education institutions in Milwaukee to participate in joint diversity initiatives to increase community engagement and outreach.
Seek external grant funding for recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts to increase the diversity pipeline into the health professions.
Design and submit a proposal for a post baccalaureate program for pre-PT students with the goal of increasing the number of underrepresented students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
Develop and implement a strong marketing and communications plan that elevates the visibility of diversity programs and resources.
Curriculum advisement for inclusiveness and cultural competency.
