Job Description

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is a student-focused law school inspired by the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, intellectual openness, and service to others. The Assistant Dean for Student Services is a member of the School of Law leadership team who serves a pivotal role in supporting students’ well-being, academic development and holistic growth.

The Assistant Dean is charged with planning and developing a vision for fostering students’ growth, leadership and wellness. This position acts as a point of contact for student-facing issues and relies on superior communication skills, extensive experience, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

The Assistant Dean is primarily responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and direction to the development of the JD student experience at the School of Law, leading efforts to ensure that all members of Loyola’s community are treated with compassion and respect. Works collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans and Staff in the general administration of the law school. Manages daily activities of the administration, interacting with faculty, staff and students regarding service and academic issues. Collaborates with Deans in developing new programs and courses. Solves problems for a broad range of stakeholders that include students, faculty, and administrators. Investigates disciplinary issues working as part of small teams. Provides one-on-one and group academic counseling, guiding students in selecting classes and meeting graduation requirements. Works collaboratively with the Career Services Office to assist students with their professional pathways. Collaborates with Alumni Relations and Advancement office to connect current students with alumni mentors. Provides student support in solving problems related to academic, personal, mental health, and financial issues. Plans events and tracks related costs. Reviews and approves vendor contracts for purchasing. Ensures ADA guidelines are followed when providing academic accommodations. Ensures ADA guidelines are followed when providing academic accommodations. Coordinates the administration of exams for students with accommodations. Improves internal communications by implementing technology. Manages responsibilities of staff in Office of Student Services.

Other duties include:
-Provides daily email newsletter communication to all students through Law School Announcements, including special/targeted messages about required events or important administrative announcements.
-Collaborates closely with student organization to foster their growth and leadership skills, managing and supporting student events with transparent and clear budgetary guidelines.
-Maintains and updates student handbooks and resources (the First Year Information Guide, the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct, the Student Organizations Handbook).
-Supervises over 30 student groups, ensuring that each group follows University guidelines.
-Directly involved in student disciplinary actions, disability and academic accommodation compliance, and all levels of student services.
-Directs and coordinates School of Law’s Rome Study Law Abroad program.
-Plans, organizes, and runs 1L Orientation and various first year mandatory programs, including 1L Family Day.
-Assists with overall course planning and scheduling, including exam scheduling and administration.
-Leads presentations to large groups of students covering professionalism (Civility in the Profession), curriculum counseling, and requirements for graduation.
-Schedules and plans Dean’s Town Hall meetings to foster discourse with students.
-Works with Alumni Relations and Career Services Office in planning alumni networking events (i.e., 1L Professionalism Meals, 1L Speed Networking Program).
-Serves as an advisor for the Student Bar Association, Latinx Law Students Association, First Generation Law Students Group, and Black Law Students Association.
-Assists students in registering for national membership organizations (such as NBLSA) and in making registration and travel arrangements for student conferences and conventions (NBLSA, NLLSA, HNBA, Lavender Law, NLG, etc.). Assists in organization of affinity group alumni events (Hollowell Awards Brunch, Race & Law Symposium, APALSA Awards Ceremony, LLSA Alumni Networking Panel).
-Organizes forums for the Illinois Latino Law Student Association and the National Latino Law Students Association.
-Works with the Dan K. Webb Center for Advocacy to support the advocacy competition teams.
-Assists in graduation-related planning and events (such as Graduation Family Night).
-Serves on the Deans Diversity Council, International Law Committee, the Bar Exam Success Committee, the Student Engagement Committee, and the Diversity and Inclusion Workgroup.
Manages, administers and supports accommodations frameworks.
-Reviews and administers character and fitness rules and guidelines.
-Manages and balances the School of Law’s events calendar.
-Collaborates well with others.
-Other duties as assigned.
