Job Description

Indiana University School of Medicine, a national leader in research, education and clinical care, is pleased to announce the search for Executive Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, vision and direction for the School’s efforts to achieve inclusive excellence.

IU School of Medicine (IUSM) is the largest medical school in the country with more than 20,000 living alumni and 3,000 learners on nine campuses across the state. Its diverse faculty is made up of 2,914 full-time members and 3,737 volunteer faculty who are responsible for training medical, graduate and postgraduate students. IUSM is the only allopathic medical school in Indiana.

Guided by its vision to lead the transformation of healthcare through quality, innovation and education and make Indiana one of the nation’s healthiest states, IUSM recently recommitted to and expanded upon its core values through a revision of its Honor Code, articulating the School’s goal to be an anti-racist, equitable, welcoming, and inclusive organization. Consistent with this commitment, IUSM sponsors robust DEI programs and initiatives organized around the four pillars of representational diversity; inclusive working and learning environment; cultural competence, humility, anti-racism training; and health equity, in collaboration with our primary clinical partner, Indiana University Health, the largest and most comprehensive health system in the state.

IUSM seeks to build upon this foundation and become a national exemplar in the embodiment of the core values of diversity, equity and inclusion. The EAD and CDO will report directly to the School of Medicine Dean and Executive Vice President for University Clinical Affairs, Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD, MPHA, and will work closely with academic, research and clinical leaders across the organization to advance DEI strategic priorities for students, trainees, faculty, and staff. The EAD and CDO will lead a team of faculty and staff to set school-wide strategy, develop and implement relevant policy, define and monitor key accountability metrics, provide content expertise and consultation to other units, and strengthen existing and launch new initiatives to address needs. As a member of the Dean’s senior executive team, the incumbent will serve as an institutional thought leader, contributing across mission areas.

This position is ideal for a transformational leader who can build on existing strengths and work collaboratively with the leadership of IUSM and the academic health system. Doctorate or Terminal degree is required, with eligibility for appointment at the associate or full professor rank; appointment type is open and will be determined based on academic credentials. The individual selected must have relevant background and scholarship and experience leading DEI initiatives with demonstrated outcomes in higher education, health systems, or academic medicine, with a strong preference for experience in academic medicine. The successful candidate must have a broad skillset in strategy development and execution, communication, and change management to navigate across a complex organization. We desire candidates who enhance our representational diversity, as well as those whose work contributes to equitable and inclusive environments for our learners, staff, and faculty.

See the search website to learn more and apply: https://faculty.medicine.iu.edu/eaddeisearch/ To apply, please include (1) a letter of interest summarizing your relevant background, scholarship, and leadership experiences and (2) a curriculum vitae. The priority review deadline is Jun 20, 2022. Nominations accepted at https://faculty.medicine.iu.edu/nomination-form-ead-dei-cdo/.

The main campus of IUSM is located in Indianapolis, the state capital, which is growing economically thanks to a strong corporate base anchored by one of the largest concentrations of health sciences companies in the nation. Residents also enjoy leading education systems and top-ranked universities. IUSM provides dual career services to assist new faculty with their personal or family relocation needs. For detailed information, visit: https://faculty.medicine.iu.edu/relocation/

As the nation’s largest medical school, IUSM is committed to being an institution that not only reflects the diversity of the learners we teach and the patient populations we serve, but also pursues the values of diversity, equity and inclusion that inform academic excellence. We desire candidates who enhance our representational diversity, as well as those whose work contributes to equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for our students, staff, and faculty. IUSM strives to take an anti-racist stance, regularly evaluating and updating its policies, procedures, and practices to confer equitable opportunities for contribution and advancement for all members of our community. We invite individuals who will join us in our mission to advance racial equity to transform health and wellbeing for all throughout the state of Indiana.

IU School of Medicine is committed to providing dual career services to assist new faculty with their personal or family’s relocation needs.
