Job Description

Hebrew Seminary: A Rabbinical School for Deaf & Hearing

Organization Overview
Hebrew Seminary is a unique, pluralistic, egalitarian rabbinical school for Deaf and hearing people of all genders. Founded in 1992 by Rabbi Dr. Douglas Goldhamer to meet the needs of all Jewish communities, especially those traditionally underserved, its mission is to prepare students as rabbis and Jewish educators to serve all Jewish communities, including the Deaf community. Our program encourages the highest commitment to traditional scholarship, such as Bible, Talmud, Hebrew, Jewish philosophy, and Kabbalah. This teaches our students to be scholars, educators, and leaders, as well as spiritual guides who can experience and share the voice of God with members of their communities.

Position Overview
Hebrew Seminary: A Rabbinical School for Deaf & Hearing seeks a Professor for a Spring Semester 2023 (February 6-June 20) course currently titled “Introduction to Arabic as a Jewish Language.” The course aims to engage rabbinical students in both the practice of and the prospect of learning Arabic in light of the Jewish texts, Jewish cultures, and neighboring texts and cultures that help inform Jewish life in the past, present, and future. The Professor reports to the Rosh Yeshivah. The course meets during the semester 15 times, for 90 minutes each, via Zoom, one day a week, and with one date available for a final exam (though this date can be saved for a make-up session in case of need).

Position Responsibilities
– Instruct and counsel students enrolled in the course;
– Stimulate student engagement;
– Assign relevant homework and administer exams or other graded projects that aim to expand the students’ mastery of the Course material;
– Develop and execute the Course’s curriculum* and provide students with a detailed syllabus; and
– Assess student progress and report student progress to the Dean of Students and Rosh Yeshivah.
*Please note that, given the short notice of this position opening, the Rosh Yeshivah, Rabbi Jonah Rank, is available to help the Professor design the syllabus for this particular course.

Qualifications
– Comfort managing classroom instruction via Zoom;
– Strong written, verbal and listening skills;
– Ability to work independently and as part of a team of diverse people; and
– MA or PhD in a related field; and/or rabbinic ordination.

Compensation
This part-time position pays $3,000 (minus any relevant withholdings/taxes), generally distributed in approximately evenly divided payments monthly at the end of each month of the semester.

Inquiries and Application
To apply, please send a cover letter, an academic CV, and 3 academic references (students and/or mentors past or present) to: rabbirank@hebrewseminary.org.
