Position Description

The Curriculum and Pedagogy Manager (CPM) plays an essential role supporting all courses offered by the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB), from large and logistically complex introductory courses to upper-level classes.
Instructional Support Hiring, Training, and Management Pedagogical training to graduate students and assists assigning them to the courses they will teach in the following semesters as Teaching Fellows (TFs). Develops and manages a unified undergraduate student teaching staff recruitment platform for all chemistry courses to hire Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Peer Study Leaders (PSLs), Runs training sessions for TAs/TFs and PSLs; coordinates with Bok Center for additional teacher training and evaluation addresses and resolves teaching staff concerns/conflicts/performance issues.
Assessments, Assignments, Problem Sets: Develops and equips courses with guidelines and best practices regarding how to develop homework, in-class assignments, and student assessments, and regarding how to implement those through effective grading platform, in-class polling platform, online forum, skill-based adaptive online learning modules, and other chemical educational technologies. Develops and equips courses with guidelines and best practices regarding how to create practice exams, answer keys, grading rubrics, and the guide to students on how to best use the practice exams.
Course Management and Coordination: Develops and maintains best practices regarding course management and coordination for courses, which include the use of the Canvas site, my.Harvard.edu, enrollment lottery, sectioning, in-class/take-home examinations, excused request system, midterm progress reports, late-day allowance system, course recordkeeping, teaching staff meeting and recording, classroom media technology, and budgeting. Provides resources to course heads/preceptors to address student concerns. Responds to student and teaching staff emails.
Curriculum Development: Works with Course Head Instructor(s) to create and/or update course syllabus and course policy in order to foster an inclusive and equitable learning environment for a diverse student body. Creates, develops, and implements learning modules that are embedded in the course curriculum to help students develop metacognitive approaches to their learning and form productive and transferable learning strategies in STEM. Co-develops the curriculum for the graduate teaching practicum course (Chem 301) that trains the first year graduate students in CCB in their teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students. Experiments with and implements new pedagogical approaches.
Student Support: Hosts weekly office hours. Meets with students one-on-one. Organizes and provides extra help to struggling students. Expand the Peer Study Leader Coaching Pilot to all introductory chemistry courses, in which students benefit from more intentional one-on-one coaching meetings with a PSL to adopt effective learning practices and tangible plans to make progress and succeed in the courses. Together with the ADUS, serves as the primary liaison with Academic Resources Center and connect students to resources (peer tutoring, academic coaching, and workshops) as well as integrate these resources into the courses more closely. Coordinates requests from the Disability Access Office: curates and disseminates to teaching staff, and makes sure that correct accommodations are in place.
Classroom Teaching: Creates and delivers review lectures to help students transition to college chemistry learning.
Professional Development and Outreach: Attend conferences focused on education and pedagogy. Works with members of the CCB educational team on educational research projects. Organizes training opportunities for high school chemistry teachers and recruit Harvard graduate and undergraduate students as trainers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree, credential, or equivalent experience/competency in Chemistry.
  • Master’s degree preferred in chemistry or science education. Demonstrated interest and experience working with students from all backgrounds, including first-generation students, low-income students, and students from under-resourced high schools.
  • Experience providing academic support to university students in one or more areas related to college learning, such as teaching, peer tutoring, or academic coaching.
  • Knowledge of best practices in chemical education. Understanding of high school chemistry curricula and transitions to college learning.
  • Superior organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong initiative, the ability to lead and train teaching fellows, and to manage relationships with undergraduate students.
  • Proven engagement with learning about and implementing new pedagogical approaches in education, an ability to quickly adapt to new situations and navigate difficult challenges, and a demonstrated interest in improving best practices in education.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the field of academic support and academic coaching within the context of a liberal arts curricula.
  • Experience teaching, advising, or mentoring students in chemistry.
  • Knowledge of or experience with development and use of online tools for academic support.

Additional Information
The CPM will report to CCB’s Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies (ADUS), and work collegially with the undergraduate teaching staff.
