Systems Support Engineer Senior (Remote Eligible)

Job Summary:

Responsible for advanced level design, integration, implementation and modification of a wide variety of user information systems usually within a highly complex environment. This includes coordination of the installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of those systems. Provide functional and technical expertise in support of user systems operation and maintenance. May include support of labs, training facilities and general IT office software and hardware. Provides technical advice and leadership to lower level technical staff. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: system staff and departmental users including management. This position typically will advise and counsel: systems staff.  This position will supervise:  NA (work direction only)

Responsibilities
Job Duty 1 –
Conduct needs analysis, planning and scheduling the installation of a wide variety of new or modified hardware/software.
Job Duty 2 –
Develop functional and technical IT system requirements and specifications.
Job Duty 3 –
Provide technical support through allocating systems resources, managing accounts, administering passwords, documentation, security, recoverability and access including deploying security and operating system patches.
Job Duty 4 –
Monitor and reports on system performance.
Job Duty 5 –
Support internal departmental servers.
Job Duty 6 –
Maintain hardware and software inventories including developing and updating departmental distributed software license management policy.
Job Duty 7 –
Makes technical presentations to other technical personnel and user department administrators.
Job Duty 8 –
May lead project technical team; provide technical advice to lower level technical staff.
Job Duty 9 –
Perform other duties as assigned
Provide technical leadership of the configuration management tools in use by PACE, defining roadmaps for new functionality, features, and integration to other tools in use by PACE, the office of information technology (OIT) and other areas of Georgia Tech.

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
Required Experience
Four to six years of job related experience

Other Required Qualifications
Georgia Fourth Class Boiler License; Valid Georgia Driver’s License. May require handling of hazardous materials and working in areas near rotating machinery, live electrical wiring, high-pressure liquids and gases and heated surfaces.  May require lifting objects up to 75 pounds , working in confined spaces, exposure to high noise levels, climbing ladders and standing/walking on scaffolding.  May require work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.  Wearing of full-face respirator may be required.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Technical leadership skills
Red Hat Linux System Administration, 3-5 years experience
Configuration and automation management systems (Puppet, SaltStack, Ansible), at least 2 years experience.
Large Unix based system administration; experience managing environments larger than 100 servers.
Scripting and programming languages, 3-5 years experience
3-5 years experience managing TCP/IP based networks
Understanding of Infiniband interconnections and topologies
Project management foundations
Information technology infrastructure library (ITIL): operations, change, release, configuration, incident and problem management. Understanding and knowledge of the complete framework preferred, with emphasis on service support.
Good communication skills.

This job requires advanced knowledge of complex concepts, practices and procedures associated with IT systems design, installation and maintenance. Expert knowledge in variety of applications and platforms is required.

The Systems Support Engineer Sr. is part of the Cyber infrastructure team within the Partnership for an Advanced Computing Environment (PACE) providing system administration and support of the high-performance computing resources provided to the Georgia Tech students, faculty and researchers.  Works closely with all the areas of PACE to maintain the research clusters and supporting systems operating optimally.
