Job Description

Provide functional oversight to operation of an instructional or research laboratory.  Activities include instruction in lab procedures and safety, development of lab procedures, conducting experiments, budgeting and purchasing, equipment and inventory maintenance and maintaining records.  May provide work direction to student assistants. This position will interact on a consistent basis with:  academic and/or research faculty members, staff and students, vendor/suppliers.  This position typically will advise and counsel:  lab users, students, student assistants.  This position will supervise:  NA

Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Other Required Qualifications
Overnight travel required for project delivery; flexibility in on-site daily service delivery hours (due to client shift schedules, project requirements).

Required Experience
Four to five years of job related experience

Job Duty 1 –
Provide instruction to lab users on proper use of lab equipment, lab safety, protocols and procedures related to conducting experiments

Job Duty 2 –
Prepare and administer laboratory budget; purchase supplies and equipment and maintain related records

Job Duty 3 –
Maintain laboratory facility in safe, clean and organized manner

Job Duty 4 –
Coordinate scheduling of lab usage

Job Duty 5 –
Develop and implement laboratory policy and procedures; incorporate best practices as appropriate

Job Duty 6 –
Calibrate lab instrumentation and maintain lab equipment

Job Duty 7 –
Direct scheduling and work of student assistants, as required

Job Duty 8 –
Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Use of required skills practiced in a university environment is preferred

Master’s  Degree

SKILLS
This job requires working knowledge of instructional or research laboratory operation to include equipment calibration and maintenance, laboratory processes and procedures and lab safety rules and practices.  Skills in communication, customer service, work guidance and instruction are required as is the use of specialty and general computer applications.

Skills

The successful candidate should have a basic knowledge of cell biology and experience in sample preparation, image acquisition, and analysis. They should be well versed in fluorescence and brightfield microscopy, point scanning and/or spinning disk confocal microscopy, and multiphoton excitation. Experience with Zeiss and Nikon systems is a plus. Experience with laser capture microdissection, dSTORM, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and light sheet microscopy is also advantageous. Training students, staff, and faculty will be the primary responsibility along with providing excellent technical and applications support. Great communication (both written and spoken) skills are essential to performing at a high level.
