Job Description

The Department of Theater in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, at Florida International University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Acting starting in the fall of 2022. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position. The typical teaching load is 6-9 units per semester. There is a course reduction in the first two years to establish an active program of research and/or creative activity towards tenure and promotion. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities:

  • teach all levels of acting (for BA/BFA majors and non-majors)
  • teach other courses based upon the applicant’s expertise
  • direct one production per academic year
    maintain an active creative and/or scholarly agenda
  • participate in department/university service
    participate in student recruitment
  • mentor performance majors
  • advise student productions/projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal Degree in Theatre MFA or PhD required by time of appointment
  • Experience teaching acting
    Professional experience as an actor
  • Ability to direct productions
  • Experience or desire to work with students, staff, and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years of applicable university, conservatory and/or professional studio teaching.
  • A strong understanding of culturally responsive and trauma-informed pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: Voice & Movement, Directing, Musical Theatre, Acting for the Camera, Theatrical Styles, Black, Latinx, Indigenous, or Asian theatre/performance
