Job Description

Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota), invites applications for a Diversity Teaching Fellow specializing in Percussion starting August 15, 2023, for a two-year term (with the possibility of renewal). This Fellowship is aimed at diversifying faculty who teach at Concordia and in liberal arts colleges generally and otherwise supporting the College’s initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This full-time position will be hired at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor, commensurate with qualifications; one-sixth of the position is devoted to diversity-related activities.

The successful candidate will be a percussion specialist able to lead the percussion studio (both music majors and non-majors); teach percussion lessons, percussion techniques, and jazz and commercial drum set; coach or conduct percussion chamber music (configured according to student needs and the candidate’s interests and expertise); and contribute in one or more of the following areas: music technology, music production, world music, jazz studies. Contributions may also be possible in areas of the candidate’s interest and expertise that align with departmental priorities.

The successful candidate will also hold unique musical and teaching skills that will complement and further advance Concordia’s vision for the 21st-century musician; bring versatility, innovation, and imagination to shaping the percussion area; exemplify a collaborative musician, teacher, and colleague; exhibit strong interpersonal skills to further elevate the music department’s level of performance and community engagement; promote diversity and inclusive practice in programming, instruction, and recruitment on behalf of the studio, department, and college.

A Masters’s degree in a percussion-related music field is required; a Doctorate (or ABD) is preferred. Teaching and performance experience appropriate for teaching at the collegiate level is also expected. Technological fluency is strongly preferred, as is experience in a studio environment.

Applicants should have a plan for professional and artistic development to be conducted during the Fellowship. Non-teaching responsibilities will include creative activity, wider campus service, and recruiting activities, determined in collaboration with the department chair. The Fellow will implement a plan for their own artistic development with support from colleagues and the department; involving students in this creative activity is encouraged.

In support of the College’s ambitious goals for diversity and inclusion, the Music Department is interested in applicants who will contribute to the development of an increasingly diverse campus community, and have experience working effectively with diversified populations and responding to the changing demands on emerging music educators and professionals. The successful candidate will aspire to be part of a community that affirms an abundance of identities, experiences, and perspectives in order to imagine, examine and implement possibilities for individual and communal thriving both inside and outside of the Music Department. Applicants from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply, as are early career artist teachers.

The Music Department at Concordia College is NASM accredited and the largest single department on campus, with 40 faculty and more than 1/4 of the entire student body participating in vocal and instrumental lessons and ensembles. The department maintains an excellent reputation throughout the region, with over 150 students majoring in music (music education, composition, or performance) each year, many of whom pursue careers in music education, while others pursue graduate school and/or careers in performing or creative activity. The post-graduation employment rate for music education majors pursuing jobs in the field is extremely high, and many graduates go on to achieve graduate degrees at leading national institutions.

Concordia College is a private, co-educational, baccalaureate liberal arts college of approximately 2,000 students and 150 faculty. The college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and prepares students to become responsible leaders in the global society. It is located in the Moorhead (MN)/Fargo (ND) area, a growing metropolitan area of 235,000, consistently ranked among the nation’s most livable cities. Fargo-Moorhead’s thriving cultural scene is home to a variety of professional arts organizations including its own opera, ballet, and theatre companies, symphony orchestra, film festival, and art museums and galleries. Please visit the Concordia College website at http://www.concordiacollege.edu for more information about the college and the music program.

Applications may be submitted online at https://hr.cord.edu/postings/9841. Required: cover letter, resume/vita, and contact information from three references. Additional materials may be requested later, and candidates will be notified if references are contacted. Review of applications will begin March 27, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. Note: International work visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
