This is an incredible opportunity for a strategic thought leader, advocate, collaborative campus partner, and proven administrator with an innovative, consistent track record of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice efforts to serve as founding Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer (CDEI) at CSU, Stanislaus.

 

The inaugural CDEI will serve as a member of the cabinet, with strategic responsibility for promoting and enabling inclusive excellence for students, faculty, and staff. The position reports directly to the president, with close working relationships with the Division Vice Presidents. The position serves as an advisor to the president and the president’s cabinet on matters related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice.

 

The CDEI serves as a highly influential leader focused on deepening ongoing efforts to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive community for all faculty, staff, and students. Priorities for this role are strategy and engagement; coordination and alignment; communications and issues management; implementation and success metrics.

 

The ideal candidate will be a transformational leader who is collaborative, approachable, responsive, and who will have:

·      Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop and nurture strong working partnerships across the university environment and external systemwide CSU community.

·      Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply data and utilize institutional benchmarks to program and operational design, promote accountability for the diversity mission and inclusive excellence values, and strategically drive organizational change.

·      Strong demonstrative experience in practical problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.

·      Demonstrated experience in working effectively as a member of a senior leadership team.

·      Proven experience in building strong, collaborative partnerships across the organizational community.

·      Demonstrative experience applying inclusion, equity, civility, and access in an organizational setting.

·      Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

·      Ability to examine and develop operations and procedures and formulate policy.

·      Demonstrated intercultural competency skills and knowledge of contemporary issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and providing an equitable and inclusive working and learning environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·      Provide strategic leadership in the development of a comprehensive and integrated framework for diversity, equity, and inclusion, synchronizing and leveraging current efforts and initiatives, and introducing emerging practices in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

·      Facilitates sharing of best practices and identify opportunities for greater alignment and more unified efforts across campus.

·      Provide leadership, expertise, and vision for the implementation of the university’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of DEISJ initiatives in alignment with our overall University Strategic Plan and make recommendations for improvement.

·      Serve in a collaborative and coordinating role with division, college and department units who are responsible for diversity and inclusion to develop (and where appropriate coordinate) programmatic activities that support the achievement of the strategic commitments.

·      Chair the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion (PCDI).

·      Collaborate across campus and with the Human Resources, Equal Opportunity & Compliance and Faculty Affairs departments to identify and address systemic barriers to diversity in recruitment and retention efforts for race and gender underrepresented staff, management, and faculty.

·      Foster an inclusive campus culture that supports and values diverse perspectives and experiences.

·      Provide guidance and support to employee resource groups and affinity networks.

·      Serve as a thought leader, advocate and resource to the campus and community regarding diversity, equity and belonging, including building skills and capacity and be available for problem solving, training, facilitation, mediation, and consultation.

·      Coordinate with student support services related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

·      Work in conjunction with faculty, staff, and students to address equity and inclusion within the classroom and the campus community and to encourage the development of curricula that are appropriately inclusive in content and method.

·      Gather and analyze data to identify issues, increase transparency, propose solutions to issues, and establish metrics to gauge progress. Present data to the President, cabinet, and other on and off campus constituencies.

·      Forge strong working relationships with colleagues across the CSU system in similar roles to create a network, leverage resources, and engage the broader community through engagement.

·      Participate in various campus committees.

·      Develop and oversee annual and multiyear budgets to support DEI operations and initiatives.

·      Seek diversity-related funding through private, local, state, and federal sources with the assistance of the University Advancement division.

·      Develop and maintain active external partnerships with advocacy groups, community-based organizations, foundations, and alumni affinity groups to build and strengthen relationships that advance DEISH initiatives.

·      Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION 

·      A master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.

 

EXPERIENCE

·      5 or more years of experience in higher education administration.

·      Success in working with diverse constituents on complex issues and a high level of cultural awareness, sensitivity, empathy, and discretion.

·      A passion for the work, an ability to challenge and motivate, be welcoming of a wide variety of perspectives and modes of action and the ability to lead conversations about difficult topics.

·      A deep commitment to the university’s mission.

·      Knowledge of research, trends, and best practices as they relate to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

·      Excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, and presentation skills to engage key stakeholders in on and off campus initiatives.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·       Terminal degree or doctorate preferred.

·       Familiarity with the California State University system.

·       Experience gained in a college or university of comparable size and complexity, state or federal government agency is preferred.

Starting Annual Salary $189,904 – $200,000 (Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)

·      Medical: employer contribution to CalPERS medical insurance with automatic enrollment into the Tax Advantage Premium Plan with a variety of medical plans to choose from.

·      Dental: Employer paid with the option of two plans through Delta Dental.

·      Vision: Employer paid with automatic enrollment for the employee and dependents through VSP.

·      Flex Cash of $128 monthly upon waiver of medical coverage.

 

Retirement

·      Participation in the CalPERS Retirement Plan

·      PEPRA – 2% at 62.

·      Classic (CalPERS member between January 15, 2011 – December 31, 2012) – 2% at 60.

·      Classic (CalPERS member prior to January 15, 2011) – 2% at 55.

·      Additional voluntary retirement savings plans available.

 

Leave Programs

·      Holidays: fourteen paid holidays each year, thirteen scheduled days, and one floating holiday.

·      Sick leave: eight hours of sick leave per month with no maximum accrual.

·      Vacation: begins with two vacation days (16 hours) per month up to a maximum of 384 hours.

·      Additional paid leave programs such as bereavement leave, catastrophic leave, parental leave, jury duty leave, and organ donor leave.

The California state legislature established Stanislaus State College in 1957 as the fifteenth campus of the California State University (CSU) system. Classes commenced in September 1960 in temporary quarters located at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. The college moved to its permanent 228-acre site in 1965. Stanislaus State now offers two campuses, one in Turlock and one in Stockton.
