DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of five departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The Department has 14 full-time faculty members who serve almost 800 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students including almost 70 percent of students of color. The Department offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs in civil engineering. Most recently, the Department was ranked 8th among non-doctorate granting institutions by the U.S. News & World Report. The Department is thriving with its diverse student population, respected faculty, and strong industry and alumni support.

POSITION DETAILS:

The position is a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning with the Fall 2022 semester.

JOB DUTIES:

Duties will include: (1) effectively teaching courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, (2) advising diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students, developing curriculum, and other instructionally-related duties, (3) developing and engaging in scholarly activities, including applied research and externally-funded projects, (4) developing and supervising Master’s student research, (5) working cooperatively with a diverse student population and with faculty colleagues on department, college, and university-wide committees, and (6) providing service to the institution and community, as Sacramento State strives to serve as an Anchor Institution to the surrounding community.

Teaching responsibilities include environmental engineering courses (both lecture and laboratory courses) and other classes in the Civil Engineering Department in the B.S. and M.S. Civil Engineering degree programs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: An earned doctorate degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field with an emphasis in environmental engineering is required. ABD applicants will be considered. If ABD, all requirements for the degree must be completed by August 2022.

Special Knowledge and Abilities: A strong background in environmental engineering and a commitment and ability to provide quality teaching are required. Candidate should demonstrate potential for building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, and service; be able to work with diverse students and colleagues; create inclusive classrooms; and apply a variety of teaching methods. Applicant must have effective oral and written communication skills and be able to relate theory to practice.

Experience: Applicant must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam prior to the appointment date. A certificate of passing of the FE exam must be presented by August 2022.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The department prefers candidates with broad expertise in treatment systems for water, wastewater, and stormwater. Secondary areas of interest include treatment plant operations, water reuse, and natural water quality. Other preferred / desired qualifications include:

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering
Professional registration as a Civil Engineer
University-level teaching experience
Professional practice experience in civil or environmental engineering
Ability to develop an applied research program that engages graduate and undergraduate students
Knowledge of environmental and water resources issues related to California
