DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:Butte-Glenn Community College District’s Music Program offers a wide range of performing and learning experiences, housed in a specially designed Arts Building that encourages a conservatory atmosphere. The Music Program provides educational opportunities designed to meet the needs of students who wish to explore and expand their knowledge, performance skills, and appreciation of music. This is fulfilled through a program that includes applied and group music instruction, history, vocal and instrumental ensembles, theory, and musicianship. The curriculum is intended to serve music majors, general education transfer students, vocationally oriented students, and the community.

The College is seeking a candidate to serve as a lead faculty member for the music theory and musicianship sequence. Based on the candidate’s particular strengths and interests and on the needs of the music department, the Music Instructor will teach, develop and coordinate a growing music program, balancing general education with courses for majors, ensembles, and applied instruction.


Ideal candidates will possess the competence and energy required to build a vibrant music program; contribute to department initiatives; provide direction, organization, and outreach/recruitment for the long-range development and community engagement of the Music Program.


In addition to the responsibilities of the classification description, the specific position is also responsible for:


• Teaching multiple levels of classes for music majors which may include music theory and musicianship, ensembles (e.g., orchestral or voice, and/or specialized ensembles emphasizing jazz, chamber, and/or symphony), piano, applied lessons, and composition.


• Teaching general education music courses such as music appreciation and music history.


• Using a variety of methodologies and modes of instruction including use of a learning management system to provide online course content and interactions/communications with students.


• Organizing, supervising and directing musical performances including hosting public performances; evaluating the performance of students engaged in the study of music; participating in faculty recitals; conducting major and/or specialized ensembles, teaching both technique and musicianship to a variety of levels and abilities; and other related work as required.


• Working collaboratively within the department and institution to support the needs of the music program, participating in curriculum development, program review, and in the review and assessment of student learning outcomes and course success rates disaggregated by race/ethnicity and other key demographics to ensure the success of all students.


• Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, online or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed.


• Designing and delivering lessons and presentations that effectively use a variety of teaching techniques, including active learning and culturally responsive teaching.


• Skillfully address issues of equity in the classroom as well as cross-cultural situations with sensitivity and compassion.


• Recruiting, advising, and coaching music majors interested in transferring; serve as liaison to university-level programs.


• Maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics.

Representative Duties


The full-time college instructor is responsible for effective performance in the following areas:


A. General Scope of Responsibilities

• Contribution to the College as a whole in the form of College- wide service.

• Service to the local community (optional).

• Development and assessment of student learning outcomes


B. Teaching and Instruction – The following duties are representative of the kinds of expectations that are normally required of a full-time Butte College instructor. Certain duties are common to the everyday operational needs of the College while other activities may be required on an as needed basis. All of the duties, however, are common requirements at various times for full-time instructional positions.


• Plans for and initiates curriculum improvements.

• Plans for and is continually well prepared to teach.

• Provides organized delivery of instruction.

• Is courteous to and approachable by students.

• Instruction is consistent with the stated and approved goals and content of the course.

• Sticks to the subject matter of the course.

• Shows enthusiasm for the subject matter.

• Uses effective motivation to create a personal desire to learn the subject/skill(s).

• Uses standards of student evaluation that are clear, fair and followed consistently throughout the course.

• Requires levels of instructor and student effort sufficient to the mastery of the subject or skills in the course.

• Grades and returns student assignments and tests in a reasonable period of time.

• Makes effective use of teaching aids and materials required of students (e.g., texts, manuals, etc.).

• Is effective as a teacher.

• Prepares complete course outlines and syllabi.

• Continually revises and updates course content and materials of instruction.

• Coordinates course contents and methods with other teachers in the program/discipline.

• Meets and assists students during office hours or by appointment or at other reasonable times.

• Initiates and carries through with improvements to course contents and methods.

• Initiates and/or participates in overall department-wide program development, maintenance, evaluation, revision and/or expansion.


C. Professional Growth and Currency


• Instructors are required to show examples of activities which demonstrate a pattern of academic, professional, and/or technical updating or currency.


D. Area or Departmental Responsibilities


• Is knowledgeable about and abides by College policies and procedures. This includes the accurate and timely submission of all reports, grades and paper work.

• Meets deadlines and time targets.

• Orders instructional materials, equipment and textbooks with sufficient lead times.

• Assists in scheduling.

• Assists in course staffing functions.

• Provides assistance and help to other full-time, part-time and/or new instructors.

• Coordinates plans and activities with others.

• Provides information for the development of departmental budgets.

• Monitors expenditures to keep within authorized budget spending appropriations.

• Exercises good judgment in the use of and/or management of facilities, equipment and supplies.

• Attends assigned meetings as requested.

• Is punctual to assigned meetings.

• Works well with peers, classified staff and administration.

• In general, is easy and cooperative to work with.

• Does their fair share of outside of class departmental duties and responsibilities, including contributing to unit plan and program review processes.


E. College-wide Service – Demonstrates a pattern of College-wide service including one or more of the following:


• Volunteers to serve on College committees.

• When requested, serves on College committees and project teams.

• Serves as a sponsor to student clubs and organizations.

• Participates in faculty/college governance.

• Participates on special project teams or ad hoc committees.


F. DEIA Self-Reflection Statement


Each faculty member will prepare aa Self-Reflection statement using the approved format as described in Appendix G2. This statement is intended to foster a conversation among colleagues that reflects on how faculty can individually and collectively work to improve student outcomes for historically under-represented and disproportionately impacted populations. The self-reflection statement should be used to help advance individual professional development and institutional dialogue on change.


G. The education, experience, aptitudes, skills, etc., for instructional positions differ by type of academic or vocational program. Refer to job announcements for specific job specifications.


H. For Cal Works instructors only, Section 7.2.1(D) 15 and Section 7.2.1(E) 2 together mean: Works closely with public employment and training service agencies to coordinate instruction and curriculum.






• Master’s in Music; OR


• Bachelor’s in Music AND Master’s in Humanities; OR


• Possession of a current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an instructor in the applicable discipline. OR

• Teaching experience.


• Subject matter competency, including theory and musicianship, musical instruments, literature for various sizes of ensembles, and rehearsal and conducting techniques.


• Culturally responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging students who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional classrooms.


• Experience working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.


• Experience with educational technology, including online instruction, and using a learning management system, such as Canvas.


• Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum.


Supplemental Information




• Education Code § 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.

• As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee’s responsibility.
