Job Description

Brown University invites applications from rising and established leaders in neuroengineering for a tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Successful applicants will have an outstanding record of research and teaching in one or more of, but not limited to, the following neuroengineering focused areas: real-time neural signal decoding and responsive neuromodulation in humans, next-generation neural interface development including multimodal sensors or actuators of the nervous system, human high-resolution electrophysiology, and translational rehabilitation engineering. We seek a faculty member who will contribute to the mission of the School of Engineering and the broader brain science community and will help to create and advance neurotechnology to restore, replace, or repair neurologic function. Direct engagement in clinical research is strongly encouraged. We are particularly interested in scholars who demonstrate commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in the brain sciences and engineering. Applicants with postdoctoral and/or industry experience are encouraged, as are more established academic investigators.

About the Environment
Brown Engineering provides a unique environment, emphasizing the power of interdisciplinary thought with a focus on expanding connections across engineering disciplines and beyond traditional departmental boundaries. Brown Engineering has a long history of leadership in neuroengineering research and translation, with further acceleration from a new Engineering Research building, strong interactions with the Carney Institute for Brain Science, extensive partnership with the VA RR&D Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology (CfNN), and a new Institute for Biology, Engineering, and Medicine (I-BEAM).

Brown’s Carney Institute promotes discovery and innovation in brain science by supporting a diverse community of experimentalists, theorists, engineers, and clinicians. With more than 180 affiliated faculty members in more than 20 academic and clinical units, the Carney Institute catalyzes research across the brain sciences, including in the neurobiology of cells and circuits, computation in brain and mind, cognition and behavior, and neuroengineering and neurotechnology.

The VA RR&D Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology (CfNN) is a collaboration between the VA Providence Healthcare System, Brown University, Butler Hospital, Lifespan, and Massachusetts General Hospital. CfNN unifies distinguished researchers and clinicians to advance and translate neurotechnology to restore lost function. Through its three focus areas and three support cores, CfNN seeks to develop, test and implement new therapies and technologies that restore function for Veterans with disorders affecting the nervous system.

We seek to hire an exciting new faculty member who will work closely with the engineering, brain science, and translational clinical science community at Brown University.

Brown University School of Engineering seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, viewpoints, and ways of knowing and learning.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD at the time of joining the faculty. The start date can be anytime between July 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025.

Application Instructions
All candidates should submit: (1) a teaching statement; (2) a research statement; (3) a diversity and inclusion statement; (4) a curriculum vitae; (5) up to five publications; and (6) a cover letter describing their interest in the position. Candidates currently holding tenured faculty positions should provide the names of three referees; these referees will not be contacted without prior authorization from the candidate. Candidates who do not currently hold a tenured faculty position should have at least three letters of reference submitted before the application deadline. Letters of support should speak to the candidate’s potential as a scholar, colleague, mentor and teacher. Inquiries about the position should be directed to neuroengineeringsearch@brown.edu

Full consideration will be given to applications received by October 31, 2023; we will continue to accept applications until the position is filled. Brown is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, and members of underrepresented groups in brain science and engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.
