The Career Education and Outreach Specialist leads initiatives to support the career readiness and professional development of all Binghamton University students. This position focuses on strategic career engagement across campus, this staff member would have significant presence for appointments and programming within the residential communities and support the professional development of student leaders on campus.

Career Engagement:

The career education and outreach specialist leads efforts to connect all students with the career knowledge, education and resources in order to further their success. This position will be highly student facing, focusing on 1:1 consulting, presentations for both student organizations and classes, and outreach initiatives. The specialist will work collaboratively with Residential Life staff, collegiate professors and Residential Student Engagement Specialists (graduate level live-in positions in partnership with Residential Life) to provide tailored outreach and consulting availability within residential communities. As a partner to Residential Life, the specialist will provide appointments and programming for students living on campus, assessing the individual needs of each residential community and the students who live in them. This position’s office will be located centrally within the College-in-the-Woods residential community, and also have a presence in the apartments and other communities across campus. This position will support the professional development of student leadership positions on campus including Residential Life student roles, orientation advisors, tour guides, campus recreation and MHOPE interns. The career education and outreach specialist will also have the opportunity to teach a career exploration course (CDCI 200).

This position will also serve as the liaison to Binghamton University Athletics and the Student Association. For student athletes, this includes providing consulting availability, and programming for student athletes and presenting to their first year experience class each fall. Additionally, the specialist will serve as the liaison with the Student Association, identifying ways to form partnerships to broaden the reach of career services within the student experience.

Outreach Initiatives:

The Fleishman Center is committed to serving all students equitably, and therefore, this position will work strategically to provide outreach to communities in need. The specialist will participate in large scale events such as Kickstart, Orientation, Job Fairs and other programmatic offerings where needed. This position will also work closely with the Senior Associate Director of Student Engagement and Career Readiness to help track student engagement across their academic experience and provide intentional outreach to students who haven’t engaged in key career development benchmarks.

The Career Education and Outreach Specialist will be responsible for managing the Residential Student Engagement Specialists, and overseeing the Student Career Influencer internship program. The Student Career Influencers provide outreach and career engagement initiatives on campus and work to expand students’ knowledge of the Fleishman Center and its resources. The specialist will interview and hire team, assign workload, develop outreach and programmatic plans, and complete evaluations as needed.

Core Responsibilities:

-Set goals and provide overall leadership for the residential engagement partnership
-Develop initiatives and approaches to engage students at scale through programming and intentional outreach to communities in need
-Develop relationships across campus with faculty, staff and student organizations, cultivating presentation opportunities to scale career development
-Provide 1:1 support to students for appointment hours including supporting walk-in services
-Serve on two career cluster teams
-Supervise Residential Student Engagement Specialists and the Student Career Influencers
Requirements:

-Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of professional experience
-Experience developing programs, and partnerships
-Strategic thinker, with ability to brainstorm and collaborate with a team to develop long-term strategies that support the success of Binghamton University students
-Self-starting, creative professional with the ability to create and manage multiple projects simultaneously
-Demonstrated experience working cooperatively and collaboratively with students, employers, staff and faculty with diverse backgrounds
-Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write compelling career education content that engages the reader
-Must share core values of campus collaboration, high ethical standards and dedication to what is best for students, employers and Binghamton University
-The ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred:

-Master’s degree in higher education or a related field (required to teach)
-Experience supervising or providing mentorship to students
-Knowledge of student development and career development theories
-Knowledge of a career management and higher education systems, such as Handshake, Banner, and Brightspace
