The Assistant Director leads efforts to connect all students with career knowledge, education and resources in order to further their success. The Career Cluster program is a key aspect of the Fleishman Center’s efforts to provide tailored career-specific content to students. In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director, the Assistant Director sets goals and direction for the career cluster initiative and leads content development efforts for this program. This includes creating and managing blog content and targeted resources, as well as the development and ongoing management of career guides and other career readiness resources. The Assistant Director will lead a team of career education staff to set goals and direction for career education content that is distributed to students.
The Assistant Director oversees the Career Core Internship program. Career Core interns seek to engage students on the topic of career development in intentional, fun, and interactive ways. The Assistant Director supervises the program interns, co-teaches their self-contained internship course and oversees intern activities, in collaboration with the marketing coordinator.
Internships
The Fleishman Center is committed to all students engaging in impactful internship experiences. The Assistant Director guides Fleishman Center initiatives that aim to increase students’ overall participation in internships. The Assistant Director identifies impactful ways to increase Binghamton University students’ overall participation in internships, with particular focus on student groups who are less likely to participate in internships.
The Assistant Director also provides leadership for the Fleishman Center’s academic credit-bearing internship program (CDCI). Through this program, students are able to earn credit for internship experiences throughout the calendar year. The Assistant Director leads the Fleishman Internship Program team, which includes supervision of an administrative staff member as well as the Internship Program Coordinator. The Assistant Director sets overarching goals and direction for the program, manages and participates in the Academic Council, and guides the development of policies and practices for the program. Working with the Internship Program Coordinator, the Assistant Director also identifies ways to integrate more academic departments and campus offices into the Fleishman Internship Program.
The Assistant Director will also be responsible for managing at least 2 professional staff and student staffing, it will be critical for this person to have strong leadership skills. The Assistant Director will assign workload, manage their team, and complete performance programs and evaluations for professional staff.
Core Responsibilities:
-Set goals and provide overall leadership for the Fleishman Internship Program (CDCI)
-Develop initiatives and approaches to promote participation in internships to all Binghamton University students, but especially to student groups that are less likely to participate in internships
-Manage the career cluster blogs, including setting the direction for content and soliciting content as needed from student staff, career cluster teams, partner offices, alumni, and employers
-Provide 1:1 support to students on a limited basis, including supporting walk-in services
-Serve on two career cluster teams
-Supervise at least 2 professional staff, graduate assistants, and student interns (Career Core)
-Serve on the Career Experiences and Education leadership team
Requirements:
-Master’s degree in higher education or a related field and 3 plus years of professional experience in career services
-Experience developing career education and programming content to engage students in career development
-Strategic thinker, with ability to brainstorm and collaborate with a team to develop long-term strategies that support the success of Binghamton University students
-Self-starting, creative professional with the ability to create and manage multiple projects simultaneously
-Demonstrated experience working cooperatively and collaboratively with students, employers, staff and faculty with diverse backgrounds
-Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write compelling career education content that engages the reader
-Must share core values of campus collaboration, high ethical standards and dedication to what is best for students, employers and Binghamton University
Preferred:
-Experience supervising professional staff, student staff or paraprofessional staff
-Knowledge of student development and career development theories
-Preferred knowledge of a career management and higher education systems, such as Handshake, Banner, and Brightspace
-Knowledge of media development tools such as inDesign, video editing software, Canva, etc
-Experience successfully managing social media with evidence of audience engagement
