Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Director of the Strategic Learning Center position. The Assistant Director of the Strategic Learning Center is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $65,000 per year – commensurate with experience. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Assistant Director is responsible for collaboratively developing, administrating, and implementing the vision of Amherst College’s new Strategic Learning Center (SLC). The center provides academic support to all students who might benefit from individualized academic coaching in the areas of study strategies, including time management, organization, note-taking, reading, and test preparation. The Assistant Director will be highly knowledgeable of study skills and strategies, with an ability to facilitate workshops and academic coaching sessions tailored to the needs of a diverse student body. Experience with holistic student development/advising, growth mindset practices, and academic coaching/mentoring models is desired. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership, interest, and initiative in shaping a new learning center within an elite liberal arts college environment.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Direct Student Support Services
• The Assistant Director provides regular one-to-one academic coaching and group-based workshops that are student-centered, holistic, facilitate a growth mindset, and help students achieve their academic goals
• The Assistant Director coordinates, initiates, and conducts specific outreach to undergraduate students who might benefit from the center’s learning resources
• The Assistant Director may become responsible for peer tutoring initiatives (hiring, training, supervision, evaluation), partnering with academic departments and campus colleagues coordinating similar efforts across campus
Leadership/Collaborative Projects
• Delivers learning strategy workshops and presentations to various campus constituents, including summer programs, orientation, student organizations, academic departments, and Student Affairs
• Communicates with faculty and students to seek feedback and recommendations related to enhancing student learning in and outside of the classroom
• Participates on committees/working groups that support student learning and referrals to the SLC
• Expands the SLC’s web-based learning resources and facilitates social media communications on behalf of the center
• Collaborates with campus colleagues (i.e. Class Deans, Faculty, Accessibility Services, Identity and Cultural Resources, Student Care) to offer holistic learning support and programming based on student needs, data assessment, and evolving campus trends
• Works closely with the director in implementing the vision of the center
Qualifications:
Required
• Master’s Degree in Higher Ed, Education or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience providing individualized academic coaching and/or group workshops
• Excellent interpersonal, group leadership, and written and verbal communication skills
• Understanding of diverse learning styles and college-based learning strategies
• Demonstrated organizational, time management, problem solving, project management, presentation, team-building, and collaboration skills
• Tact and discretion for sensitive &/or confidential matters
• Commitment to working with a diverse community
Preferred
• Master’s Degree in Higher Ed, Education or related field
• 3-5 years’ experience providing academic support/learning enhancement strategies to college students
• Experience with neurodivergence and the ability to provide a range of effective learning strategies
• A strong understanding of student development theory and practice
