Job Description

UCLA Spanish and Portuguese Assistant Professor — Spanish Linguistics

University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF08145

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics. The expected start date is July 1, 2023. The successful candidate will teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses, normally four per year, in Spanish and English in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will strengthen our graduate program in Spanish Linguistics and support our Spanish and Linguistics major and our Spanish, Community and Culture major.

Applicants must have Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics or equivalent in hand, native or near-native fluency in Spanish, evidence of excellence in teaching and strong research potential. We seek a linguist with specialization in syntax and/or phonology of Spanish and indigenous languages in Central America. The successful candidate will be able to conduct advanced research and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish syntax/phonology, historical linguistics, dialectology, and field methods. Preference will be given to applicants demonstrating clear evidence of scholarly potential in community-engaged research on the languages and cultures of Central American indigenous populations.

All applications must contain a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research, statement of teaching philosophy, a Statement of Contributions to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion that describes the candidate’s past, present and planned contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion; two writing samples, and three letters of recommendation. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Those under serious consideration may be asked to provide additional writing samples and letters if selected for further review. Applications should be submitted using the UCLA academic job application site, https://recruit.apo.ucla.edu, for job number JPF08145. Review of applications will begin 2/20/23. Applications submitted by 2/20/23 will receive full consideration. For further information please consult the Search Committee Chair, Professor Ji Young Kim (mailto:jkim@humnet.ucla.edu).

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists’ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated

findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table(s) #1. The salary range for this position is $70,900-$92,800. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. See campus compensation page for additional information.
