Job Overview
Provide direct oversight in the administration of an advising center with responsibility for planning, policy and results.

Primary Function of the Position
Responsible for development, implementation and administration of goals to achieve strategic advising mission and objectives set at university and unit levels; assume leadership responsibility for advising programs and priorities associated with student success and retention; make decisions and understand quality of execution have significant impact and influence service delivery at an academic college or central level.

Formulate, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, and controls; manage processes to increase student support and advance service levels; responsible for policy execution and results that enrich the student experience; formulate and communicate major policy changes affecting students and university partners; and participate in cross-functional policy development.

Essential Functions
The Director, Academic Advising provides leadership and has supervisory responsibility for the administration and the overall operation of the academic advising program. The Director reports to the Senior Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and has the following responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in developing and maintaining a learner-centered, case management and culturally responsive advising system for new and continuing students that integrate advising throughout the students’ entire college experience
  • Provide academic advising using university tools (student information systems, academic planning resources and degree audit systems), intervention, support services, and programming to students enrolled at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College (UCC) in campus based and online/distance learning programs as a member of the Advising Center
  • Utilize a student-centered approach to enhance students’ likelihood of retention and success in the College and at the university
  • Assist students in developing a portfolio of experiences which will enhance their college experience and prepare them to transition to a career or further education consistent with our commitment to the Bearcat Promise
  • Ensures students’ progression toward their educational goal is monitored and that advising staff utilizes various strategies/tools to address academic persistence, engagement and completion
  • Works collaboratively with faculty, administrators and other student services to ensure success of the college’s proactive advising model and the delivery of advising to students
  • Will provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.)
  • Utilizes student success data and student development research to inform decisions regarding student learning and advising program outcomes, including assessing outcomes toward continuous improvement
  • Stays abreast of emerging and current research, advising technology and success strategies to provide intentional advising interactions between students and the advisement center staff
  • Works with appropriate individuals and various departments to maintain accurate, current academic and instructional program information
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with partners to create a seamless, integrated and comprehensive advising system
  • Participates in professional development appropriate to the functions of the position and professional interests. Promotes and engages staff in relevant professional development activities
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of the College and attends College events and meetings
  • Responsible for collaborating efforts with administrative and academic units and acts as liaison between the student, parent, college, student affairs and other appropriate business partners; communicate and assist students, parents, business partners resolve questions and complex issues; represent the university internally and externally
  • Develop, implement and monitor budget, as authorized; may have authority for revenue and expense planning and approving expenditure; has signature authority as “accountable officer” for programs within area of responsibility; report on budget status to higher level administrator
  • Oversee diversity, equity and inclusion strategies for the advising unit.
